Caring for your Jewellery

Jewellery should be treated with respect. When cared for properly, your hand crafted jewellery will stay looking wonderful for many years.

Care should be taken to protect it from knocks, chemicals, extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

Care for sterling silver jewellery

Over time, sterling silver jewellery can develop a darkened surface. This is a natural response to the chemistry of your skin or the environment reacting with the metal. The silver can be brightened up by using the silver polishing cloth included with your jewellery. these can also be purchases at jewellery stores.

Remove your jewellery before swimming, bathing, exercising, doing household tasks or going to bed.

Wait to put on your jewellery until after you have applied lotion, make-up or perfume.

When undressing, remove your jewellery first to avoid damage if it gets caught on clothing.

After you take your jewellery off, wipe it with a soft cotton cloth to remove any oils from your skin or cosmetics.

Store each piece of jewellery separately. If possible store in individual pouches or boxes. Hang chains in a safe place, or coil carefully to avoid damage.

Care for an oxidised finish

The oxidisation is a surface treatment I sometimes give to silver jewellery giving it a black or grey appearance.

It is normal for the oxidisation to wear off on the high points as you wear it. Polishing the silver will cause it to wear off faster. The natural wearing gives the piece depth and character that is unique to the wearer.

If you would like to freshen up the oxidised finish at any time, I am able to do this for a small fee.
